Yes. When you first get Medicare, you can join a Medicare drug plan during your Initial Enrollment Period.
After your Initial Enrollment Period, unless you have a Special Enrollment Period, you can only change plans once a year, during the Annual Open Enrollment Period, which runs October 15 through December 7 with your new plan starting in January.
Special Enrollment Periods also exist. For example, if you have Maine Care or the Medicare Savings Program in addition to Medicare, you have Special Enrollment Periods to change plans more often. If you move to a new area of the country, or move into or out of a nursing home you also have a limited Special Enrollment Period. If you lose other prescription drug coverage and it was creditable coverage, you also have a limited Special Enrollment Period to enroll in a Medicare drug plan.
For more information on these and other Special Enrollment Periods, contact your local Area Agency on Aging.
